Meet Rebecca Steele,
Houston Mural Artist and Storytelling Painter

Becky Steele is a League City-based public artist, muralist, and community art facilitator known for transforming everyday spaces into vibrant, uplifting environments. With more than 120 murals and hundreds of paintings completed across Texas, the United States, and internationally, she brings a joyful color palette, expressive impressionist brushwork, and a deep commitment to storytelling to every project.

Becky’s work blends bold, painterly textures with vivid color harmonies inspired by nature, inviting viewers to pause, breathe, and experience a sense of connection. She believes in the spiritual and emotional power of art, using rhythmic, bold brushstrokes as a visual meditation that remains visible in the final piece. Viewers can follow the movement of her hand and experience the artwork as a quiet conversation that evokes gratitude, beauty, and presence.
In addition to her public art practice, Becky leads painting classes and community mural projects that make artmaking more accessible. She has collaborated with organizations, students, and veterans, guiding participants through the creative process and fostering a shared appreciation for beauty and expression. She is bilingual in English and Spanish, expanding her ability to engage with diverse groups.
Becky began painting murals at age fifteen and has continued to refine her practice for over three decades. Her clients include the City of League City, Montgomery County Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, Starbucks (as Team Lead Artist), Conroe ISD, The Woodlands Waterway Marriott, and numerous public, commercial, and nonprofit organizations.

Her mission remains consistent: to create artwork that builds connection, celebrates community identity, and brings beauty and meaning into everyday life.

Artist Statement:
"Color is the heartbeat of my work. I’m drawn to paints with the richest pigmentation, and for murals I almost exclusively use Novacolor for their vibrancy and depth. Their tones feel alive to me, capable of mixing into every shade imaginable, and I add pops of pink, purple, and turquoise to create artwork infused with energy. I carefully prepare every surface with multiple coats of high-quality primer and, when needed, a durable SherClear acrylic marine topcoat to protect the artwork from Texas sun and humidity. I want my murals to remain as luminous as the day they were painted, because color is one of the most powerful ways I communicate."

"My style is a layered, impressionistic process that begins by outlining and grounding the forms with deep purple shadows, which reads as soft black but carries more richness and dimension. I follow with a transparent, opposite-color underpainting, often in warm pinks, purples, blues, and oranges. These undertones become the quiet pulse beneath the surface. On top, I build large, expressive brushstrokes of the final colors, allowing glimpses of the underpainting to stay visible or glow through translucent layers. I intentionally “bounce” colors throughout the mural so that even contrasting subjects share a unified visual language. This method is peaceful, meditative, and deeply joyful for me, and it reflects the way I perceive the world."

"I believe in a universal spirit that connects all creation, a vibrational energy present in nature, in color, and in the creative flow of painting. My underpainting symbolizes this subtle pulse, the life force within all things. I leave visible brushstrokes so viewers can follow the path of my hand and experience the artwork as a shared journey. The interplay of purples and blues in the shadows and soft golds, pinks, and oranges in the highlights reflects the harmony and unity I see in the world around us."

"Nature is my greatest inspiration. I often paint sunsets, landscapes, flowers, and butterflies, quiet, luminous moments that invite viewers to pause, breathe, and feel grounded again. I want the experience of my murals to feel like stepping onto a gentle nature trail, a soft rustle of leaves, the warmth of late-day light, the curve of a path leading you deeper into wonder. As a fifth-generation Texan, I love incorporating local flora and fauna, weaving our shared regional story into the work."

'My murals are a prayer of gratitude, an offering of color, peace, and joy to anyone who passes by. I believe beauty is transformative and necessary, especially in a world that often feels heavy. Public art allows me to share that beauty widely. Art belongs to everyone, regardless of whether they would ever step into a gallery. People tell me my artwork makes them smile or brings them a sense of calm, and that is my goal and my reward."

"I paint to honor community, connection, and the stories that shape us. When I create with or for others, their stories blend with mine, and the artwork becomes something shared, something alive. My hope is that each mural serves as an invitation to slow down, notice the light, feel gratitude, and reconnect with the beauty that binds us all."

Project Narratives
One of my favorite recent projects is a sunflower-and-monarch traffic box mural that celebrates resilience and everyday beauty in an eye-catching display on a busy street corner. In this piece, the bold yellows and layered blues create a vibrant, uplifting presence for the community, while the monarch butterfly suggests transformation and hope. I’m especially proud of how the composition works with the irregular surfaces of the box and remains captivating from all angles. I love incorporating sunflowers into my work because they are powerful reminders of how strength and light can rise up all around us, even in unexpected places. Their instinct to turn toward the sun mirrors a choice we all can make to orient ourselves toward the good. The mural blends my impressionist, multi-layered brushwork with opposite-color underpainting to build depth, movement, and energy.

Another project that holds a special place for me is Waffles Ascending, a landscape painting created for homeowners in Calistoga. In talking with them, I learned that as pilots they love watching the changing landscapes and colorful cloudscapes as they cross the country, and that a peaceful aerial view would create a welcoming sanctuary for their bedroom. I merged two of their own photographs—the rolling green hills near their home and a dramatic, cloud-filled sky—heightening the vibrancy and contrast to build a composition that feels both personal and majestic. I surrounded the scene with a trompe-l’œil wood frame to give the piece a classic, dimensional presence. Hidden within the clouds is a tiny two-inch portrait of Waffles, their beloved cat, gently ascending into the sky. It was a playful, tender way to honor a cherished companion, and the owners loved that the painting captures both their landscape and their story. This piece highlights my layered, expressive approach, my use of unified color harmonies, and my ability to incorporate realistic elements like the frame and shadow.

The final project, Food in Flight, features an osprey soaring across a sunrise, an image that carries both strength and serenity. I stretched and built the 8' canvas myself, and the sunrise is based on a photograph a friend captured nearby. I paired that local light with my stylized interpretation of a regional osprey carrying its fish, bringing together movement, nature, and narrative in one dynamic moment. Birds and fish are two of my favorite subjects to paint because they offer endless opportunities for color exploration, textural contrast, and expressive gesture. The layered underpainting and bold, unexpected palette helped create a look that feels fresh, dramatic, and cohesive.

Although each project is distinct- a community mural, a personalized landscape, and a wildlife portrait- they are united by my impressionist approach: energetic brushstrokes, layered color, luminous underpainting, and compositions built from both observation and imagination. Together, they reflect what I love most about artmaking: finding beauty in nature, honoring personal stories, and creating work that lifts the spirit.
